Audition Details

Be a part of this tale of piracy on the high seas! The classic account of treachery and mayhem features Jim Hawkins as narrator and reveals his encounter with the infamous seafaring man with one leg - Long John Silver. There are more than 20 roles for men and women; some roles may be doubled.

Auditioners should wear comfortable clothing as we will have basic stage combat movement exercises.

Rehearsals will begin shortly after final casting in order to allow adequate time for all pirates and the crew of the Hispaniola to learn basic stage combat training.

Regular rehearsals will begin October 22nd and will be held starting at 2:00 on Sunday afternoons and Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6:30 at the TLT building. Swashbuckling rehearsals may be before or after regular rehearsals with additional rehearsals on Saturdays as needed.

This production will include a morning performance on Friday, January 12 for area 8th graders.

Characters Available: 20+
Character Descriptions:

JIM HAWKINS (Gender: Any; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 14) - Jim is the only child of a coastal inn-keeper. Jim was very close to his father, who died from an illness while seeking a cure in London. Jim is naive but adventurous, courageous, and fiercely loyal to his friends. This role will require a very mature actor or actress as Jim is onstage for nearly the entire play.

LONG JOHN SILVER (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - Long John Silver is the former first mate of the infamous Captain Flint. Although he has only one
leg, he remains an object of fear for his fellow buccaneers. This pirate is a contradiction - fearsome and murderous but also capable of great compassion and friendship. This role will require a great deal of physicality due to Silver's prosthesis.

DR. LIVESEY (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - An educated, no-nonsense doctor and patron of the Admiral Benbow Inn. Livesey is a courageous fighter when words don't do the trick.

SQUIRE TRELAWNEY (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 40+) - A wealthy, garrulous gentleman who underwrites the cost of the voyage. He is excited at the prospect of finding buried treasure, but he is not a very good judge of character.

CAPTAIN SMOLLET (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - A proper British sailor with extensive experience on the high seas. He runs a tight ship and is wary of the crew selected by Silver.

ISRAEL HANDS (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - A greedy pirate who tends to act first and think never. This role will require a lot of physicality - and no fear of falling.

BILLY BONES (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 40+) - A former pirate who stole the treasure map from Captain Flint. His fear of his former shipmates makes him edgy and nervous, which he hides beneath a loud and threatening exterior.

BEN GUNN (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - A former pirate who served with Flint and Silver. He is quick-thinking and a survivor. He has been marooned for years, and his solitude has nearly cost him his sanity.

BLIND PEW (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 40+) - Another shipmate of Flint and Silver. Pew is a gnarled, terrifying character whose blindness has made him bitter and angry at the world.

BLACK DOG (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - Pirate who has tracked the treasure map to Billy Bones at the Admiral Benbow. He at first appears congenial but quickly shows his true colors - greed for treasure.

GEORGE MERRY (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - Bloodthirsty and ruthless, he is jealous of Silver's standing with the other pirates and takes advantage of any perceived weakness in others.

CAPTAIN FLINT (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 50+) - A small but important role as Flint's legacy is terror and treasure. He sets the bar for cruelty by which other pirates gauge themselves and others.

ANNE BONNY (Gender: Female; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - Irish pirate who sailed with Flint. She has a fiery temper and is not to be taken lightly. She and Calico Jack are lovers.

JUSTICE DEATH (Gender: Female; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 20+) - Pirate who sailed with Flint. She's vicious and more than a little unhinged.

JEMMY RATHBONE (Gender: Any; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 20+) - Flint's crewman who dies a horrible death for attempting to steal from fellow pirates.

EZEKIEL HAZARD (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 18+) - A pirate, but never the first into the fray. He is a superstitious coward.

JOB O'BRIEN (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - A pirate who is overly fond of the rum but still deadly.

JOSIAH BLAND (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 20+) - Quiet, contemplative pirate. Willing to listen before deciding on a course of action.

CALICO JACK (Gender: Male; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - A cruel pirate, not above a little mutiny, he and Anne Bonny are lovers.

MRS. HAWKINS (Gender: Female; Ethnicity: Any; Stage Age: 30+) - She has raised Jim alone since the death of her husband. Practical and caring.

OTHER TOWNSFOLK - ADMIRAL BENBOW PATRONS, BOY WITH BARROW, BRISTOL BEGGAR, BRISTOL TOWNSFOLK, REVEREND MAINWARING
