Music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by David Zippel, and book by Larry Gelbart, directed by Terry Seabaugh

City of Angels is two shows in one. Set in Hollywood in the late 1940’s, it is a film noir style detective story that presents its own writer, Stine, who is having trouble transposing his book onto the big screen. In parallel, it follows the protagonist of the film, Detective Stone, on his adventures…as Stine writes. Cy Coleman, author of such musical hits as Barnum, Sweet Charity, and The Life, said his score for City of Angels was his most personal score in his theatrical songwriting career that spanned three decades. He was excited to present real jazz whose rhythmic phrases you can’t describe, but when you’re snapping your fingers to it, you say, |This swings.| City of Angels won six Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical (James Naughton), Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Randy Graff), and Best Scenic Design. After opening on Broadway on December 11, 1989, it ran 878 performances and 24 previews. After seeing it in New York City during that run, I began dreaming of directing it for TLT, and now I am delighted to have been chosen to bring it to audiences in Jefferson City. The uniqueness of City of Angels will have you talking about it for a long time.
